The MSSM Chess Championship 2006 is underway with Round 1 having commenced at 3.00 pm today. This year’s edition is being held at the Dewan Kolej KUSZA, Kuala Terengganu. Seven rounds with time control of 90/G are scheduled over 5 days.
Together with the National Age-Group Championship, the MSSM Chess Championship is the most important annual junior chess event in Malaysia. At stake are medals in 12 categories split over 3 age-groups. There are the boys individual, girls individual, boys’ team and girls’ team medals for each of the U12, U15 and U18 age-groups.
15 teams comprising the 13 States and the 2 Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Labuan are participating. Each team is represented by 4 boys and 4 girls in each of the age-groups. The individual scores of each team’s representatives in each age-group will be totaled to determine the team score.
The team garnering the most gold medals wins the overall champions’ trophy and more importantly, the bragging rights for one year. Kuala Lumpur was the 2005 overall champion which, over the last one year, Suhairi had made sure is not a secret.
