Two Malaysian juniors matched with GMs. Li Tian to meet already his third 2400+ opponent in this event. Yit San will be inspired to seek his own GM scalp after Li Tian and Yit Ho have had theirs.

Zaidan, after sucuumbing to Mas in the last round, faces a second countryman in successive rounds, a senior-junior match-up that will be interesting in its own way.

Mas should win so that he can move up to rumble with his titled peers in the next round.

William has done well enough to get to 2.5 points from 4 games. Maybe a 2273-rated FM opponent is a bridge too far at his current stage of development. It will nevertheless be invaluable experience. However I am still looking forward to a major upset here.

Dilwen and Benjamin have more manageable opponents after tough nuts in the two previous rounds.

  1. I have provided the games as requested - see my careful selection of diagrams. The boys have done very well indeed and certainly deserve the kudos but more so our encouragement (and dare I say support?). Yet I would caution against getting carried away as Malaysians tend to do. Objectively if you examine the games as I did when inputting them into Chessbase and then exporting to my Blog (and having the advantage of being present), they still have a long way to go.

  2. Point noted. Feet are on the ground. For now, we shall just enjoy the moment. The real work starts when they come home from Brunei.
